Recognizing the severe impact that the United States Government's blockade has on every aspect of daily life for the Cuban people, on April 2, 50 members of Congress, including both Senators and Representatives, sent a letter to their President condemning this genocidal policy.
Led by Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, the legislators not only detailed the consequences of the imperialist encirclement, but also the most recent measures attempting to suffocate Cuba.
They also argue that six decades of failed attempts to bring about the intended "change” through unilateral coercive measures have ended up harming the island’s inhabitants, which is why the Democrats expressed their willingness to work with the U.S. administration to modify the "draconian and outdated U.S. sanctions."
"Doubling down on failed strategies by restricting access to energy and health care is contrary to American values and is needlessly exacerbating a humanitarian crisis," they said.
