The 81st anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) was celebrated across the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) with events on both October 9 and 10 that included a women's hockey match, floral tributes being laid at the statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, an evening gala of youth and students and a performance at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium attended by Kim Jong Un.

An ice hockey game between the Taesongsan women's team and the Pyongyang Railway Bureau women's team was held at the Ice Rink on October 9 to commemorate anniversary.

Among the spectators were Pak Thae Song, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the WPK and premier of the Cabinet of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and other senior Party and government officials, as well as "leading officials of sports events sponsoring organizations, labor innovators, famous sportspersons, teachers and researchers of party-cadre training institutions and Pyongyang citizens."

That day the Taesongsan team beat its rival 3:1.

On October 10, officials, working people, service personnel, school youth and children in the DPRK visited the statues of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il across the country to lay flower baskets and flowers.

Also on October 10, an evening gala of youth and students was held at Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang.

The evening gala began with the playing of the song "Mother's Birthday", while the assembled youth and students danced.

Other significant songs played as a fireworks display was held over the city.

A mass celebration performance was given at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium attended by Kim Jong Un. The performance began with "Long Live the Workers' Party of Korea" and "Fly High, Our Party Flag". It ended with "The National Anthem of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

The KCNA reports that "Performers gave other colorful numbers representing the ardent desire and enthusiasm of the people determined to realize the far-reaching ambition for the comprehensive development of socialism, single-mindedly supporting their motherly Party."
