Allwyn's Bakery's Spectacular Stuffed Sandwiches

The Toronto Caribbean restaurant has some terrific mains...and some truly fantastic beef patty and chicken sandwiches on coco bread

With some photos contributed by Julia Laxer

Allwyn's Bakery is a small chain of Caribbean restaurants with four locations in Toronto, including one on the Queensway in Etobicoke which is where we have tried them. They have a full, and excellent, menu of dishes like jerk chicken and other West Indian style mains.

They also offer up some spectacular -- and very affordable -- sandwiches including some that stuff chicken inside coco bread with a beef patty.

While all their locations have limited seating (when seating in restaurants is allowed again), they are also a great take-out or delivery choice.

Everything on Allwyn's menu is terrific.

If you are looking for classic mains both the oxtail and goat are highly recommended.

I am a huge fan, as any long time reader knows, of oxtail, especially West Indian style. Allwyn's oxtail is incredibly, fall-off-the-bone moist and truly tasty. It is served with rice and peas, coleslaw and plantain and runs between $13.25 and $17.25 depending on size. The portions are always generous.

The goat comes with potatoes and has a delicious gravy. It is also served with rice and peas, coleslaw and plantain and costs between $10.99 and $14.99 depending on size.

Between Thursday and Sunday they offer some perfectly cooked jerk chicken wings that are bursting with jerk flavour but not overly spicy. Half a pound are $8.99 while a pound (pictured) are $15.99.

Allwyn's sandwiches are justly gaining a reputation for being both awesome and reasonably priced.

There are a few of them and they are all worth trying. Jerk chicken and pork sandwiches with coleslaw served on their exceptional coco bread are $6.99 as is the BBQ chicken sandwich. The Patty, Coco Bread and Slaw Sandwich is a steal at $4.00.

But the two monarchs of the menu have to be the stuffed sandwiches.

The "basic" Stuffed Sandwich is a beef patty with jerk meat, and coleslaw in coco bread. It is, simply put, fantastic, and is $8.25.

The Deluxe Stuffed Sandwich is a mindboggling serving of greatness and is a beef patty on coco Bread stuffed with boneless fried chicken and shredded mozzarella cheese. I cannot tell you how terrific it is, you have to try one yourself for $8.95 which is, for what you get, a great deal.

The patties are great on their own and you can order them, aside from on the sandwiches, individually or by the half dozen ($13.50) or dozen ($24.00).

Allwyn's has four locations at 81 Underhill Drive, 4750 Yonge Street #135, 976 The Queensway (which is the one we have tried multiple times) and 404 Queen Street West. They offer takeout and delivery.

You can learn more about locations and hours on their Facebook page.
