The secretary general of the international umbrella organization Fédération Internationale des Résistants – Association Antifasciste (FIR), Dr. Ulrich Schneider, protested on Thursday against US President Trump's announcement to ban “Antifa.”
Excerpt: “Antifa” is neither criminal nor terrorist. Antifascism stands for democracy, social justice, and peace.
Once again, US President Donald Trump has declared that he will ban “Antifa” as a terrorist organization. He also announced this in the spring of 2020, after the death of George Floyd during a police operation. He reacted to the worldwide protests against racism and police violence by denouncing those who protested and stood up for freedom and democracy.
We can observe the same thing in Hungary, where a Hungarian court has accused German and Italian antifascists of founding a terrorist organization and attempting to murder a Hungarian neofascist. Here, too, we are seeing attempts to criminalize “Antifa.”
The FIR, the 75-year-old umbrella organization of veterans of the antifascist struggle, partisans, deportees, and today's antifascists, and its member associations condemn such attempts and stand up for democracy, nonviolence, freedom, and the political legacy of former veterans. We emphasize once again: Antifascism is not terrorism!
