On the 29th January 2026, the US President, Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring Cuba a threat to US national security. In line with this executive order, the US has ramped up its deliberate and calculated efforts to blockade Cuba and cut off fuel and other critical supplies in violation of the United Nations Charter and International Law.

The Trump Administration is hell bent on imposing its will on the People of Cuba, denying them the Right to Self-Determination, to determine their own fate and destiny. These imperialist machinations against Cuba are not new. Various US Presidents have employed such economic embargoes with a view to break the spirit of the Cuban nation. Thus far, Cuba has endured 64 years of US sanctions. Frustrated by the resilience of government and the People of Cuba, a legacy from their great and patriotic leader, President Fidel Castro, the Trump Administration is once again venturing on a journey reminiscent of the 1961 Bay of Pigs in which the Imperialists were defeated.

Basotho Action Party strongly and unequivocally condemns in the strongest terms possible, the dastardly, criminal and cowardly imposition of the blockade by the Trump Administration and its co-conspirators. We urge all the progressive forces around the world to take decisive steps to stop this siege that threatens the lives of the Elderly, of the Children and the Sickly whose right to life is strained by denial of proper treatment in the hospitals because of deprivation of supplies and, of the entire population of Cuba currently being subjected to untold economic blackmail.

History would judge us harshly if we were to forget how Cuba embraced the struggles for independence of the oppressed Peoples the world over, especially here in Southern Africa. The sacrifices that Cuba made in the emancipation of the Peoples of the region from colonial and Apartheid oppression demand of us to stand with the Cuban People in this hour of need. We recall with immense sense of respect the decisive defeat of Apartheid SADF in Cuito Cuanavale in Angola in which Cuba played a critical role, the defeat that paved the way for the liberation of Namibia in 1990, and South Africa in 1994. In defense of the Angolan independence and liberation of Namibia and South Africa, about 10,000 Cuban lives were lost. This was an enormous sacrifice and Africa owes Cuba a debt of gratitude. It is now time for us to pay back this debt.

Over the years Lesotho and Basotho also benefited from the Cuban People’s generosity, solidarity and internationalism with scholarships in diverse fields. In the field of Medicine where, despite its dire economic condition imposed on her by several US Administrations, Cuba has supported our country with medical personnel in various hospitals in the country. This, in line with their philosophy that a healthy nation is a productive nation.

BAP extends its solidarity to the Cuban People and adds its voice to those of the multitudes of Progressives who have stood up to be counted against US imperialist aggression on Cuba. We call upon the entirety of humanity to rise and join the HANDS OFF CUBA clarion call.

Long Live the Fighting Spirit of the Cuban People!
