Communists of Catalonia condemn the Nobel Committee's decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition figure who has defended and continues to defend imperialist and oligarchic interests in Venezuela.

This award is a provocation to the current situation of harassment in Venezuela, where more than three ships have already been attacked, and clearly seeks to legitimise an agenda of intervention, interference and domination over the sovereign peoples of the continent.

Machado has never been a defender of peace or democracy, but rather a spokesperson for reaction, capital and submission to foreign interests. She has repeatedly called for military and economic intervention against her own country, instigating sanctions and blockades that have caused suffering among the Venezuelan people. The awarding of this prize is therefore tantamount to rewarding destabilisation, imperialist violence and the denial of national sovereignty.

The peace that the centres of imperial power seek to impose is based on the subjugation of sovereign peoples and the destruction of any emancipatory project. True peace can only come from social justice, national independence and fraternity among peoples fighting against capital and imperialism.

Communists of Catalonia call for continued defence of Venezuela's sovereignty and its Bolivarian project, and we once again condemn the media offensive that the Venezuelan people have been suffering for more than 25 years.
