On April 7, 2026, during the first session of the 16th National Assembly, To Lam, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), was unanimously elected by all 495 deputies present as the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for a five-year term from 2026 to 2031. Following the election, he took the oath of office, pledging absolute loyalty to the Fatherland, the people, and the Constitution, and committing to fulfill all duties entrusted by the Party, the State, and the people.


In addition Le Minh Hung was elected Prime Minister and Tran Thanh Man was elected Chairman of the National Assembly.


In addition to the presidency, To Lam holds the positions of Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council. In his post-election address, he emphasized priorities such as maintaining stability, promoting rapid and sustainable national development, improving livelihoods, and advancing science, technology, and digital transformation.


Le Minh Hung will replace his predecessor, Pham Minh Chinh, and is expected to focus on building a modern, efficient government.


After the elections leaders from Laos, China, Cambodia, Cuba, Russia and India sent messages of congratulations to Vietnam’s key leaders.
