St. Petersburg—First Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, began his official visit to Russia on May 5 by laying a wreath at the Motherland Monument in the Pikarievski Cemetery in St. Petersburg.

According to Prensa Latina, the head of state of the Caribbean country began his official activities by paying tribute to the defenders of the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) at the monument complex, accompanied by the president of the city's Foreign Relations Committee, Evgeny Grigoriev.

Following the ceremony, Díaz-Canel and the city's governor, Alexander Beglov, held official talks where they discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the economy, culture, education, and other areas.

During the day, the leader of the Caribbean nation also visited scientific, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence development centers in what is called the northern capital of Russia.

On the second leg of his official visit to Russia, the Cuban leader will travel to Moscow, where he will participate in commemorative events and the Red Square parade marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

He will also take part in the celebrations organized to mark the 65th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba.
