From the Soviet Press, 1959: A frequently used background in Soviet painting is the industrial landscape. Characteristic is Kotov's Blast Furnace Number 1 done in 1930, at a time when the whole country was concerned with accelerating the pace of industrialization. The painting, the first blast furnace of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Plant being built, gives the atmosphere of nationwide construction.
