Daily LIFT #284

Postal workers on strike in New York City, March 1970 -- Daily LIFT #284

50 years ago postal workers in the United States went on strike in a pivotal fight to win full union rights. Over 200,000 hit the picket lines, the largest strike against the US government in history.

They were threatened with criminal prosecution and firing by the Nixon administration.

In the end the workers won many major demands, despite intimidation and attempts to use soldiers to deliver the mail. Mail delivery turned out to be much more skilled than the government thought! The soldiers were terrible at it.
