Daily LIFT #348

V. I. Lenin and Yakov Sverdlov on Red Square during a demonstration of workers dedicated to the first anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. -- Daily LIFT #348

Remarkable photo by L. Leonidov from November, 1918. Sverdlov, one of the most prominent Bolshevik leaders, died only 5 months after this during a wave of the Spanish flu pandemic at the age of only 33. After his death he was described by Lenin as "the most perfectly complete type of professional revolutionary."

This photo is part of an amazing Soviet collection of photos from the early revolutionary period in Russia and the USSR that we will be sharing as a feature starting in the new year.
