On January 8 1959, Fidel Castro entered Havana at the head of the Caravan of Freedom which had left Santiago de Cuba for the capital on January 2, the day after the dictator Batista fled the island on January 1. This great moment of revolutionary triumph was met by huge, jubilant crowds.
