Daily LIFT #377

Soviet sculptor and artist Yevgeny Vuchetich in his Moscow studio, 1970 -- Daily LIFT #377

Vuchetich (1908-1974) is regarded by many as the greatest sculptor in Soviet history. He was a Hero of Socialist Labour, People's Artist of the USSR, won the Lenin Prize in 1970, the Stalin Prize five times, was awarded the Order of Lenin, and received the Jawaharlal Nehru Award from India. Perhaps his greatest achievement was designing the magnificent The Motherland Calls memorial at Volgograd in honour of those who died to defeat the Nazis during the Battle of Stalingrad.
