A battered red victory flag is raised over Mamayev Kurgan in Stalingrad, January 26 1943. This critical height, a strategic point over the whole city, had been the scene of staggeringly brutal combat over the course of the battle. On January 26 the Red Army took it for the final time. Just 7 days later the Nazis left in the city capitulated.
