The 3rd World Festival of Youth and Students was held in the German Democratic Republic in the summer of 1951. Over 26,000 youth attended from 104 countries. Despite the myth of West German "democracy" the West German police and military tried to stop people who wished to attend from crossing over to the GDR including shooting at them when they crossed the border in some cases.
