Day of Solidarity with Cuba held at the Portuguese Communist Avante Festival

Leaders from the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), youth organizations, and representatives of Latin American parties voiced their support for Cuba and condemned the United States' policy towards the island. The day included political discussions, solidarity meetings and culminated with a concert by Arnaldo y su Talisman.

The second day of the Avante Festival, held from September 4 to 6, was particularly meaningful for Cuba due to a heartfelt act of solidarity organized by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). This event featured Marydé Fernández López, head of the Office of Attention to the UJC (Young Communist League of Cuba) and Mass Organizations, who led the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba's (PCC) delegation to the festival, alongside Pedro Guerreiro, a member of the Political Bureau and responsible for International Relations of the PCP.

The event was also attended by Paulo Raimundo, the general secretary of the PCP, along with young members of the Portuguese Communist Youth (JCP), leaders from the Cuba Friendship Association, and a substantial number of festival participants.

In her remarks, Marydé emphasized the relevance of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz’s views on the value of international solidarity and condemned the increasing escalations of the United States government toward Cuba, along with the massive effects of the tightened economic, commercial, and financial blockade and the imperial energy siege.

In the morning, Fernández López took part in a discussion on U.S. policy toward Latin America, joined by representatives from the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB), the Communist Party of Uruguay, and the Colombian Communist Party. The discussion condemned the blockade, the revival of the Monroe Doctrine and its so-called Trump Corollary, as well as U.S. interference in the region, while urging unity and coordination among the communist parties.

In the afternoon, the Cuban delegation held a fraternal meeting with the leaders of the PCB, where they were updated on the difficult situation facing our people due to the impacts of the executive orders of January 29 and May 1. Initiatives to support our country were addressed and the urgency of continuing to expand solidarity actions, both political and material, was agreed on.

The day wrapped up in style with a performance by Arnaldo y su Talisman, special guests at this year’s Festival, where several events were dedicated to showing solidarity with Cuba.

Shouts of "Cuba will win!" and "Long live Cuba!" echoed alongside Arnaldo's songs for over an hour, as the packed auditorium showed the warmth and support of the comradely Portuguese people for Cuba.
