Between them, Keir Starmer, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper seem determined to dig Labour's grave even before the next General Election, according to the Communist Party of Britain.

Addressing the party's Political Committee on the day that the number of illegal immigrants arriving on Britain's shores reached 50,000 since Labour took office, Johnnie Hunter condemned the "anti-refugee hysteria spurred on by the monopoly and state mass media".

He pointed out that the tabloid press and its BBC and Sky News "echo chambers" has been blasting out headlines about "boat people", "swamping" and newly arrived "benefit scroungers" about almost daily for the past two decades.

"But instead of countering media lies and racist bigotry and providing safe and legal routes for people fleeing war, hunger and persecution to apply for asylum in Britain, Starmer and crew have joined in the scaremongering and boasted about stopping the boats and smashing the people-smuggling gangs", Mr. Hunter accused.

"As a result, people worried about stagnant wages and falling living standards are being incited by far-right thugs and their Tory apologists to attack centres and hotels accommodating migrants waiting to find out whether they can make a home and seek work here", the CP communications director pointed out.

Britain's Communists called for mass turnouts to defend refugees from assault, with trade unions to the fore.

Mr. Hunter also suggested Home Secretary Cooper should spend less time telling tall stories about Palestine Action's secret "terrorist" agenda and instead speed up the asylum system with many more staff at home and in overseas application and processing centres.

"As for Keir Starmer, instead of big talk about smashing the gangs, he should take action to smash monopoly and foreign ownership of the press by right-wing, tax-dodging big companies and billionaires who have done much to poison political debate in Britain", he added.
