General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam, along with his spouse Ngo Phuong Ly and a high-level Vietnamese delegation, visited Karl Marx’s grave at Highgate Cemetery in London on October 28, 2025, as part of their official three-day visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Upon arrival, the delegation observed a minute of silence and laid a wreath in tribute to the great philosopher, theorist, and revolutionary.

Initially buried elsewhere, his remains along with family members were moved to a larger memorial in 1954, officially inaugurated in 1956. The famous grave features a bronze bust on a marble pedestal engraved with the iconic slogan “Workers of all lands, unite!”, taken from Marx’s Communist Manifesto.

The visit was scheduled at the start of To Lam’s official engagement in the U.K., which included discussions with Prime Minister Starmer and parliamentary leaders as well as participation in a high-level economic forum to explore cooperation in areas such as finance, energy, science, technology, and green development. He also held a bilateral meeting with Communist Party of Britain (CPB) general secretary Robert Griffiths.

The tribute to Marx carries symbolic importance, reflecting socialist Vietnam’s historical and ideological roots in Marxist thought and its leadership’s respect for revolutionary tradition.
