A strong message that “Cuba is not alone — hands off Cuba”, was sent by the people and youth of Thessaloniki during a militant rally held on February 17 outside the US Consulate, followed by a march through the streets of the city. The rally was organized at the call of the Organizations of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE).

Delegations from the Greek-Cuban Friendship Association and the Greek Committee for International Detente and Peace of Thessaloniki (EEDYETH) took part in the rally, expressing their solidarity with the people of Cuba.

Throughout the mobilization, the slogan “Imperialism will not prevail in Cuba — long live the revolution and socialism” echoed loudly.

Kostas Tsechelidis, member of the Central Council of KNE, addressed the rally, highlighting that US imperialist aggression against Cuba is escalating dangerously. “With brazen audacity and cynicism, the butchers of the peoples are intensifying their threats against Cuba. But they will not succeed! Experience and historical legacy show that when the peoples rely on their own strength and internationalist solidarity, they can prevail, and that no correlation of forces, however unfavourable it may seem, is insurmountable. For decades, there have been countless attempts to sabotage critical infrastructure, carry out assassinations, and stage provocative actions —such as those in July 2021— exploiting the shortages created by their own policies, namely the unacceptable ‘embargo’. Yet all of this was confronted by the Cuban people with the vanguard contribution of the Communist Party, and it did not succeed”, he noted, among other things.

He called on the youth and the people of the city to intensify their struggle and express their solidarity with the Island of Revolution by demanding an end to the threats and the barbaric blockade, the lifting of all measures against Cuba, and its removal from the despicable list of “state sponsors of terrorism”.

The rally concluded with a militant march through the city streets. Slogans such “The imperialists are redividing the world, carving borders with the blood of the peoples”, “Solidarity with the struggle of the peoples, down with the threats of the imperialists” set the tone. Participants also strongly voiced the demand that Thessaloniki be a port of the peoples, not a springboard for imperialist interventions.
