The Cuban President arrives in Angola
Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba arrived in Angola Sunday, August 20 to begin a tour of several African countries before his participation in the upcoming BRICS Summit in South Africa.
Upon landing in Luanda he posted "Cuba and Angola are united by unbreakable bonds of blood, solidarity and brotherhood. We are guided by the imperishable legacy of our historical leaders: Dr. Agostinho Neto and Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz."
In addition to Angola and the BRICS Summit he will visit Mozambique and Namibia.
Before leaving Cuba, Díaz-Canel said that these are sister nations to which we are united by a history marked by uncompromising solidarity.
According to a Communist Party of Cuba press release, at the summit "the Caribbean nation will advocate for enhancing effective coordination between both mechanisms of agreement to defend the claims of the global south."
Further:
"For the first time Cuba will participate in a Summit of the BRICS. We are also doing so in our capacity as Chairman of the Group of 77 and China. We will advocate for enhanced effective coordination between both consultation mechanisms to defend the claims of the global south."
The acronym BRICS refers to an economic-trade partnership of the five emerging national economies that in the 2000s were the most promising in the world: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The grouping has held annual summits since 2009, and member countries take turns hosting.
The 2023 will be the first to be held in person after the COVID-19 pandemic.
In January of this year, Cuba assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Group of 77 and China, being the first time that Cuba leads the negotiating bloc of developing countries."
