Placard from an anti-austerity march in the UK in 2016
Unions and other community groups in the UK are backing the No More Austerity demonstration which is set to take place in London on Saturday, June 7 and is meant to directly confront Keir Starmer and his reactionary agenda. Organized by The People’s Assembly, the protest aims to challenge Labour’s spending cuts and demand a shift in policy. The demonstration will begin at Portland Place, London at 12:00 PM, and march to Whitehall, where a rally featuring speeches, music, and film will be held.
According to the UK leftist Morning Star newspaper the protest comes just days before Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to announce her first multi-year spending settlement on June 11. Organizers hope to pressure the government to drop fiscal rules, tax wealth and profits, and increase spending to address funding crises in health, education, local government, and other sectors.
This comes in the aftermath of the disastrous results for Labour in the recent council elections which is leading some in the party's caucus to finally stand up against Starmer's direction.
Labour MP Diane Abbott told the Morning Star that the "result of the Runcorn by-election and the council elections have had an extraordinary effect on my colleagues. They can see their majorities crumbling before their eyes, and there’s nothing that concentrates the mind of an MP more than the threat of actually losing their seat and the salary that goes with it.”
The event is expected to bring together trade unionists, health, disability, housing, and welfare campaigners, as well as community organizations, to oppose austerity measures. Key demands include:
No to Austerity 2.0 – Fund public services.
Tax the Rich – Empower workers, not big business.
Welfare, not Warfare – Stop attacks on disabled people.
