The Europarliamentary Group of the KKE has highlighted the unacceptable ban in Germany and the Baltic states on Soviet and anti-fascist symbols, with which people around the world commemorate May 9, the day of the Great Anti-Fascist Victory, through a question submitted to the European Commission by the KKE MEP, Kostas Papadakis.

Authorities in Germany, as well as in the Baltic states, banned the “display” and posting of Soviet and anti-fascist symbols during the celebrations on May 9, the Day of the Great Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples.

The flawed reasoning behind their decision invokes the “law on freedom of assembly,” a right that is being undermined by this very ban, which is imposed on the basis of unhistorical claims and by attempting to equate capitalist Russia with the Soviet Union, where a different socio-economic system had been established. Indeed, the use of Soviet symbols is interpreted in a completely arbitrary manner as support for Russia’s “military expansionist ambitions.” This is a blatant distortion of historical truth that serves the interests of both warring imperialist sides in Ukraine—NATO as well as Russia’s opportunistic exploitation of the situation.

The ban on Soviet and anti-fascist symbols and all manner of restrictions on honoring the Great Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples, in several EU countries, are being imposed in the name of the unhistorical “theory of two extremes.”

However, the ceremonies of tribute and remembrance in Berlin, as well as around the world on May 9, are dedicated to the millions of people who gave their lives to defeat the “fascist monster”.

Indeed, at a time when the EU is allocating billions of euros from the people’s resources to the war economy, anti-communism, and the distortion of history are being exploited overall against the peoples, with the aim of imposing war plans and aligning workers with the corporate interests.

Based on the above, the KKE MEP submitted the following questions:

“What is the European Commission’s position:

- Regarding the unacceptable ban in its member states, such as Germany and the Baltic states, on the use of Soviet and anti-fascist symbols at events held annually to commemorate the Great Anti-Fascist Victory of the Peoples;

- The distortion of historical truth for the sake of serving war propaganda and aligning peoples with one side or the other of the imperialist slaughterhouse against the peoples in Ukraine;

- The urgent need to protect the historical monuments of the peoples’ anti-fascist struggle, which are currently in immediate danger from vandalism and other unacceptable acts of desecration by fascist gangs encouraged by such unacceptable bans?”
