The Workers Party has long supported the struggle of the Iranian people for peace, sovereignty, human and democratic rights and social justice.

We have received detailed reports, published by our fraternal party, the Tudeh Party of Iran, setting out the circumstances surrounding the protest demonstrations that began on 28 December in Tehran which describe the brutal mass crackdown waged by the authorities of the Islamic Republic unleashed in response to the legitimate protests of people against the catastrophic collapse of the country's national currency and the acutely deteriorating living conditions being endured by the population at large.

The demonstrations are a protest against the deep-rooted structural corruption; decades of capitalist economic policies, which have pushed millions of Iranians into crushing poverty; suppression of democratic freedoms and rights; and decades of imperialist sanctions which have massively impacted upon the ordinary people of Iran. The theocratic regime has now lost the ability to contain the legitimate protest uprisings of the people.

There have been horrific scenes of brutal killings and devastation reported in the capital Tehran and other cities in Iran since 8 January, in which thousands of people have been killed. The regime in Tehran has imposed a near-total shutdown of the internet in order to gain complete control and prevent the extent of violence and casualties being reported.

After the overthrow of the dictatorship of the Pahlavi family more than four decades ago in the popular revolution of 1979, the theocratic dictatorship quickly abandoned the ideals of the revolution and, in order to preserve the dominance of “political Islam” and protect the wealth of power-connected elites, positioned itself against the working people of Iran.

The Workers Party of Ireland is well aware of the vile role of US imperialism and the criminal Zionist government of Benjamin Netanyahu which have attempted to manipulate legitimate people's demonstrations and to use the mass protests for their own interests and to prepare the ground for direct intervention in Iran.

Our Party condemns the imperialist-backed media which has attempted to promote a false message that the Iranian people call for the return of the monarchy, a regime which brutally oppressed the Iranian people in the past.

The future of Iran lies in the hands of its people.

SOLIDARITY WITH THE STRUGGLE OF THE IRANIAN PEOPLE AND THE TUDEH PARTY OF IRAN!
