On the United States' indictment of Comrade Raúl Castro

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka condemns in the strongest possible terms the criminal indictment issued by the United States Department of Justice against Comrade Raúl Castro Ruz, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution and former President of the Republic of Cuba.

This act, announced from Miami's Freedom Tower on 20 May 2026, is a brazen escalation of Washington's six-decade imperialist campaign against the Cuban people and their sovereign right to chart a socialist path.

The charges, dredged up from the 1996 defence of Cuban airspace against repeated and provocative incursions by counter-revolutionary forces operating from US soil, are a transparent political fabrication. They are designed to manufacture pretext, in the manner of the recent aggression against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, for military adventurism against the island. We reject utterly the obscene claim that a sovereign nation has no right to defend its own skies, while the US arms, funds, and shelters those who attack it.

This indictment arrives alongside the criminal oil blockade, secondary sanctions on Cuba's trading partners, and naked threats of force – a coordinated programme of collective punishment against eleven million Cubans whose only crime is their refusal to surrender their dignity.

Comrade Raúl Castro is no criminal. He is a leader of one of the most courageous revolutions of the twentieth century, a friend of the peoples of the Global South, and a defender of Cuban sovereignty. The criminals are those who maintain the world's longest blockade in defiance of the near-unanimous condemnation of the United Nations General Assembly.

We call upon all progressive forces in Sri Lanka and worldwide to mobilise in solidarity.
