October 7, Havana: Dr. Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), welcomed Miguel Mejía, secretary general of the United Left Movement (MIU) from the Dominican Republic, at the PCC headquarters.

At the meeting, attended by Emilio Lozada García, head of the Central Committee’s International Relations Department, Morales Ojeda passed along a greeting to Mejía from Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Party’s Central Committee and President of the Republic, expressing his gratitude for Mejía’s presence in Cuba.

The party leader stressed that this visit takes place two years after both party organizations signed an Exchange and Cooperation Agreement.

We believe this visit will enable us to evaluate and continue enhancing the document that outlines the work plan to be developed between the United Left Movement of the Dominican Republic and the Communist Party of Cuba, said Morales Ojeda.

He also expressed his conviction that "the work of both parties will continue to consolidate the historic ties of friendship and brotherhood between the Dominican people and the Cuban people."

Morales Ojeda also expressed gratitude to Mejía for his presence during the current situation in Cuba, seeing it as a gesture of support for the Revolution, the State, the Government, and the Cuban people, as well as a condemnation of the coercive measures imposed by the United States on the island.

In statements to the press, Miguel Mejía said that his presence in Cuba expresses "the feeling of the Dominican people who have accompanied Cuba in these difficult times," while describing the blockade as "a silent genocide against a country..."

The secretary general of the MIU addressed the recent expulsion of Cuban diplomats by the Dominican government, stating his support for reparation in response to this unjustified action.

Mejía said that his visit also represents an expression of the feelings of the Dominican people and a vindication of the historical ties between the two nations.

The MIU has expressed its support for Cuba in the fight against the blockade and for the removal of the island from the list of States allegedly sponsoring terrorism, and has maintained a position of support and solidarity towards Cuba.
