The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia (SRP) expresses full and unreserved solidarity with the Revolutionary Government, the Communist Party of Cuba and the brave Cuban people, and strongly condemns the escalation of the imperialist aggression of the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba, which reached a new, particularly dangerous level in May 2026.

The SRP strongly condemns the heinous and politically motivated indictment of the US Department of Justice against Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, published on May 20, 2026. This indictment, which is based on the dishonest manipulation of the incident of the downing of two airplanes of the terrorist organization "Brothers for the Rescue" over Cuban airspace in February 1996, has no legal legitimacy. It was an act of self-defense, protected by the UN Charter and the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, after more than 25 serious and deliberate violations of Cuban airspace by the terrorist organization between 1994 and 1996.

This bogus indictment is being brought by the same government that killed nearly 200 people and destroyed 57 vessels in international Caribbean and Pacific waters between 2025 and 2026, using military force, which qualifies as extrajudicial killings under international law. The SRP fully supports the position of the Revolutionary Government of Cuba that this indictment is "a desperate attempt by anti-Cuban elements to construct a false story in an effort to justify collective and merciless punishment against the noble Cuban people."

SRP condemns the brutal, genocidal and decades-long economic, trade and financial embargo of the USA against Cuba. This criminal sanctions regime, which escalated during President Donald Trump's second term, today includes a de facto energy blockade. An executive order dated January 30, 2026 imposed tariffs on goods from countries that sell or ship oil to Cuba, leading to a collapse of the energy system, hours-long power outages and a humanitarian crisis on the island. New Sanctions on Cuban Institutions and Officials On May 19, 2026, the US administration sanctioned 11 Cuban officials and three government agencies, including the Department of the Interior, the National Police, and the Intelligence Directorate. Secondary sanctions and deterrence of foreign partners – On May 1, 2026, an executive order was signed to extend sanctions to foreign persons and companies doing business with Cuba, especially in the energy, mining, financial and security sectors. Under the pressure of these sanctions, the Canadian mining company was forced to suspend its decades-long operations in Cuba, and large shipping companies suspended the delivery of cargo to the island.

A US military attack on Cuba would cause bloodshed with incalculable consequences because Cuba has an absolutely legitimate right to defend itself against military attack.

President Trump has repeatedly stated that "Cuba is next", that he can "do whatever he wants with Cuba" and that he is considering military action. The US has stepped up spy flights over Cuban territory and deployed an aircraft carrier to Caribbean waters.

These threats are a continuation of the imperialist aggression already carried out against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, where in January 2026 US forces abducted the legitimate president Nicolás Maduro. The imperialist aggression against Cuba and Venezuela is part of the same strategy aimed at destroying socialist and progressive governments in Latin America and establishing full US hegemony over the continent.

The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia stands side by side with the Cuban people and their revolutionary leadership. It fully supports Cuba's legitimate right to self-defense, recognized by the Charter of the United Nations, the unwavering determination of the Cuban people to defend their homeland and their socialist revolution, and gives full support to Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, the leader of the Cuban Revolution.

The SRP demands from the Croatian government, the European Union and the international community the immediate and unconditional abolition of all forms of sanctions, embargoes and energy blockade against the Republic of Cuba, which represent a collective punishment of the Cuban people and a violation of international law, and the withdrawal of the false and politically motivated indictment against Comrade Raúl Castro Ruz. We demand the suspension of all threats of military aggression and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cuba. We demand an end to interference in the internal affairs of Cuba and respect for the Cuban people's right to self-determination and the choice of their own socialist path of development, as well as the exclusion of Cuba from the false list of "state sponsors of terrorism", which is a cynical weapon of US imperialist policy.

We call on all progressive, anti-fascist and anti-imperialist forces in Croatia, Europe and around the world to raise their voices against this new escalation of imperialist aggression.

Cuba is not alone!

Presidency of the Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia (SRP)
