16 September 2025 marks the second anniversary of the establishment of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). On this occasion, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka extends greetings and solidarity to the heroic peoples and leadership of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The formation of the AES, through the Charter of Liptako-Gourma, was a decisive blow against neocolonialism and an affirmation of the right of oppressed peoples to sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.

For too long, imperialist forces have exploited the Global South while imposing underdevelopment on its peoples. The Global North’s sanctions, threats of intervention, and campaigns of destabilisation reveal their true character: they are not defenders of democracy, but defenders of exploitation. They fear above all the example of peoples rising to shape their own destinies.

Since the formation of the AES, there have been positive proposals such as a common currency and passport, a joint development bank, and joint defence cooperation. The AES seems to be part of a broader wave of anti-imperialist realignment across the Global South. From Latin America to Asia and Africa, oppressed peoples are seeking new foundations of cooperation, free from the stranglehold of imperialism and neoliberalism.

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka condemns all sanctions and threats of military intervention against AES, which represent attacks on the sovereignty of the African people as a whole. We salute the courage of the AES leaders and peoples who, in the spirit of national liberation, have chosen the difficult but necessary road of independence.

Long Live the Alliance of Sahel States!

Long Live International Solidarity!
