Office of the Secretary-General

South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) PARTY STATEMENT ON THE FUEL BLOCKADE AGAINST CUBA (translated from the Spanish)

The SWAPO party expresses grave concern and strongly condemns the United States of America for imposing a complete blockade on fuel supplies to the Republic of Cuba. This action has significant humanitarian consequences for the Cuban people and extends a long-standing policy of unilateral economic restrictions.

The blockade follows recent developments in Venezuela -- including the actions that led to the removal of President Maduro and his wife, comrade Cilia Flores -- as well as rising tensions in the wider region.

These regrettable actions raise serious concerns about respect for national sovereignty, the principles of non-interference and the values of multilateral cooperation in international affairs. They risk further destabilizing the region and complicating efforts toward inclusive global partnerships based on mutual respect and shared development.

This total blockade worsens the economic difficulties already faced by Cuba and its citizens due to the existing embargo, a policy that the SWAPO party has consistently opposed and has demanded be unconditionally lifted.

In a spirit of solidarity with the people of Cuba, and guided by its commitment to the advancement of the Global South, regional stability, and constructive international relations, the SWAPO party calls for the immediate lifting of the fuel blockade and the broader trade embargo.

We encourage all progressive nations and forces committed to peace, dialogue and fair and just cooperation to support efforts to resolve these issues through diplomatic and multilateral channels.

The SWAPO party reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the Republic of Cuba and its people. It remains committed to strengthening the historic ties of friendship, bilateral and multilateral cooperation, trade and mutual support between Namibia and Cuba, as well as with the peace-loving nations of the world.

Issued by the SWAPO party
