On March 23, 2026, the National Assembly of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic officially re-elected Comrade Thongloun Sisoulith as President during the inaugural session of its 10th legislature in Vientiane. He was re-elected as General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) during its 12th National Congress in January 2026. This marks an important moment of continuity of leadership in the country for the upcoming term.
Alongside Thongloun Sisoulith’s re-election, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone was also re-elected, maintaining continuity in Laos’ top political positions. The session also included elections for other high-ranking officials, reinforcing the country’s leadership structure.
Several world leaders extended congratulations following the announcement. Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Thongloun’s re-election, underscoring the close ties and strategic partnership between China and Laos. In his message, Xi noted that China and Laos are friendly socialist neighbors with a shared future. The two sides have always supported each other with sincerity and mutual assistance, and firmly backed each other on issues involving their respective core interests and major concerns, reflecting their profound friendship of "comrades plus brothers," he said.
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko also sent his greetings, expressing confidence in Laos’ ongoing development under Thongloun’s leadership. Additionally, Cambodian Acting Head of State Hun Sen conveyed congratulations, acknowledging Thongloun’s continued leadership for the Lao PDR.
