Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary To Lam arrived in Pyongyang in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on October 9, 2025, beginning a three-day state visit at the invitation of Kim Jong Un. This visit represents the most significant high level visit between the two socialist nations in almost two decades, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster solidarity and diplomatic and economic relations between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the DPRK.
Upon his and his delegation's arrival Kim Jong Un chaired a welcome ceremony in Pyongyang that included a 21-gun salute fired in their honour. The ceremony demonstrated the formal respect and importance both sides place on their longstanding traditional friendship.
A key highlight of the visit will include meetings and talks between To Lam and Kim Jong Un, focusing on enhancing cooperation and solidarity between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Workers’ Party of Korea. These talks emphasize mutual support and the continuation of friendly relations in the face of challenges both nations face.
In 1950, the DPRK was among the first nations to form diplomatic ties with Vietnam. This traditional friendship was cultivated by President Hồ Chí Minh, President Kim Il Sung, and successive generations of leaders from both countries. The DPRK supported Vietnam during its historic fight for national liberation, while Vietnam has consistently supported the DPRK during challenging periods.
General Secretary To Lam's official visit to the DPRK coincides with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the Friendship Year 2025.
