Wartburg Castle anniversary stamp -- Stamps of the GDR #29
Wartburg Castle in Thuringia is probably most famous as the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible into German. Its foundation began to be laid in 1067.
This stamp was issued in honour of the 900th anniversary of that event in 1967. After the formation of the German Democratic government the castle, which had been allowed to fall into disrepair, was extensively restored and reconstructed.
In 1967 the castle was the site of the GDR's national jubilee celebrations that also honoured the beginning of the Reformation.
