February 14 marked the 83rd anniversary of the liberation of Luhansk (Voroshilovgrad) from the Nazi occupiers. Despite the rise of modern trends, some young individuals continue to observe the imposed Catholic holiday of Valentine's Day by exchanging "valentines" with their loved ones.

For the past 10 years, on this day, Luhansk communists and Komsomol members have a tradition of hosting an alternative event where they distribute 'Stalintines' -- red hearts featuring images of Soviet leaders and a message encouraging the celebration of Soviet and Orthodox holidays.

In addition to "Stalintines", "Lenintines", "Klimentines", "Dzerzhintines" and "Brezhnevtines" are used. Experience has demonstrated that "Stalintines" are kept as souvenirs rather than being discarded. They are hung on car windshields, attached to home refrigerators, military personnel keep them in their pockets, and students pass them around from hand to hand.
