An urgent call to preserve peace

Call of the International Relations Commission of the National Assembly of People's Power (translated from the Spanish)

The members of the International Relations Commission of the National Assembly of People's Power of the Republic of Cuba call on the citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean, and of the United States, to act in a timely and decisive manner in favor of preserving our region as a Zone of Peace, as approved and proclaimed by the Heads of State and Government at the CELAC Summit held in Havana in January 2014.

We support the message of the President of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO), which denounces the disproportionate and aggressive deployment of naval and air assets, including a nuclear submarine, and the high number of U.S. troops presently in the Caribbean Sea.

We have the duty and the right to defend the peace and lives of our peoples. Dozens of people have already been killed in attacks by U.S. forces on vessels in the area, which qualify as extrajudicial executions and constitute a flagrant violation of international law.

Let us raise the voices of legislators from our region and the world to stop the threats and criminal intentions of the current White House administration that, under the pretext of waging a fight against drug trafficking, hides the true purpose of provoking the overthrow of the constitutional government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. and seizing the valuable natural resources of that country.

The militarization in the Caribbean for several weeks now constitutes an act of gross interference by the United States government. Its implementation reflects the philosophy of imperial domination rooted in the Monroe Doctrine, spanning more than two centuries and serves as the foundation for its interventionist actions on the American continent.

The threats involve efforts to breach the borders of sovereign nations and utilize the territories of third countries. Washington's most recent aggressive act was the arbitrary and immoral decision to close Venezuela's airspace. In this context, we endorse the prompt condemnation by the Cuban Foreign Minister, who characterized the incident as a significant threat and an intensification of military aggression and psychological warfare against the Venezuelan people and government.

We are committed and obligated to urgently act on behalf of our peoples, reaching out with a message of peace to the American public to prevent the shedding of blood in Latin America, the Caribbean, and also of citizens of the United States.

Let us work quickly to increase the demands for peaceful coexistence across all international parliamentary platforms and in the media, as many men and women globally understand the need to contribute every possible effort and action towards the preservation of peace, life and the security of our peoples.

Let's say No to war!
