Protest in Ioannina -- All images via the KKE
The Communist Party of Greece reports that in cities across Greece, the forces of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) and the KKE, together with class-oriented trade unions, continue their activities against the imperialist war in the Middle East and Greece’s involvement in it. Through pickets and other forms of protest, demonstrators condemned the attack on Iran, expressed their solidarity with the Iranian people, and demanded the closure of US-NATO bases and the return of Greek armed forces stationed abroad.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, and to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis; National Defence, Nikos Dendias; and the Interior, Theodoros Livanios, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE, has called on the government to brief Parliament in a Plenary Session on the serious developments following the US-Israeli attack.
The letter reads as follows:
“Following the US–Israeli military attack on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory actions against US military bases in the region, an extremely dangerous situation is unfolding that could lead to a generalized war in the region.
Our country, under the responsibility of the government, is deeply entangled in US-Israeli plans, in which the military base at Souda plays a pivotal role. As a result, the danger facing our country and the Greek people is more than real, as evidenced by the recent decision of the National Security Council (KYSEA) to implement emergency security measures for US military installations in Greece.
It is also evidenced by attacks on similar bases and infrastructure in several countries in the region, including the British base at Akrotiri in Cyprus.
At the same time, there is a serious risk to Greek citizens and workers in Iran and other neighbouring countries, as well as to Greek seafarers in the Persian Gulf.
The developments are very serious and therefore require the government to provide official information to the Greek people (...) through a formal briefing by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence, with the opportunity for party representatives to respond as well.”
