Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, translated from the Spanish

Cuba calls for an end to the new aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran and to avoid an escalation in the Middle East.

Cuba condemns in the strongest terms the attacks perpetrated 28 February by the United States and Israel, which breach the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and International Law.

This irresponsible and deliberate attack undermines the efforts of international diplomacy concerning the nuclear issue for the second time, and while negotiations on the nuclear issue were in progress. Once again, the United States and Israel threaten and seriously endanger regional and international peace, stability and security, the effects of which are already being felt in the Middle East region.

Cuba joins the international calls to immediately end this attack that has caused an unknown number of civilian casualties, including children, and to prevent an escalation driven by well-known hegemonic interests with stated intentions of domination through military force, that would drag other countries in the region into the conflict with unpredictable consequences. Cuba also advocates for preserving the good neighborliness principle between Iran and the Arab States at this delicate moment.

Strict respect for the principles of International Law and the UN Charter must prevail, especially the sovereign equality of States, non-interference in their internal affairs and the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or the political independence of any State, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

It is urgent that the United Nations Security Council exercise its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and that the UN General Assembly mobilize the international community to restore peace with the urgency and determination that the moment demands.
