First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Cuban Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez visited the statue of Fidel Castro in Moscow's Sokol neighborhood on May 7 as part of his state visit to Russia for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over fascism during the Great Patriotic War.

The statue was originally inaugurated in November, 2022 at a ceremony attended by Vladimir Putin and the Cuban leader. Díaz-Canel Bermúdez visited the statue again in 2024 when he was in Moscow for the 79th anniversary of Soviet Victory Day.

The Cuban President and the other members of the Cuban delegation placed red flowers at the base of the monument, where the name "Fidel" is engraved. Before that Díaz-Canel Bermúdez had arranged the ribbons of a floral offering, which read, "This is a tribute from the Cuban people to the Commander in Chief."

On social media the Cuban President wrote: "He didn't want statues or monuments, but the Russian people decided that there should be a place in Moscow to commemorate the Cuban leader who brought relations with this great country to the highest level. Here, his followers have returned to bear witness to the continuity of his thinking."

Fidel Castro first visited the USSR in 1963 during an historic 38 day trip around the great socialist state.
