Despard fought for women's suffrage and women's rights in early 20th century Britain and was jailed four times for it. She knew Eleanor Marx and fought into her 90s for social justice, the rights of women and workers and for peace.
In 1930 at age 86, she toured the USSR and afterwards joined the Communist Party of Great Britain.
She died in November, 1939 at age 95
