Message of solidarity and condolence from the Workers Party of Ireland to the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain on the tragic rail crash in Toledo province on 28 October 2026

The Workers Party of Ireland extends deepest condolences and solidarity to the people of Spain following the tragic rail crash in Toledo province on 28 October 2026 when two high-speed trains collided on the Madrid-Seville line. Many lives have been lost and many injured. This tragedy revives painful memories of the accident earlier this year on the same high-speed rail line outside Córdoba, in which 46 people died.

The Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) has highlighted the fact that rail networks suffer from chronic delays, deteriorating infrastructure, underinvestment in maintenance and precarious working conditions due to the logic of private profit where the state continues to promote the liberalisation of rail transport, open the door to the progressive privatisation of railway services, maintenance and infrastructure management and guarantee private profitability contrary to the interests, safety and security of the working class.

At this time of profound grief, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, with those recovering from injuries and with all the rescue workers, medical personnel and volunteers who have responded with courage and dedication in the aftermath of this tragedy.

With heartfelt sympathy and solidarity,

Ted Tynan, President

Gerry Grainger, International Secretary

On behalf of the Central Executive Committee of the Workers Party of Ireland
