UN Again Overwhelmingly Condemns the US Blockade on Cuba Despite Intense Pressure

On Wednesday morning, the UN General Assembly again condemned the U.S. blockade on Cuba, with 130 nations voting in favor despite an intense US campaign of threat and intimidation.

The United Nations General Assembly voted for the 34th time to condemn the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, with 130 votes in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions. While this is down compared to the previous year, when 165 countries backed the resolution, it comes after the US mounted an unusually intense diplomatic effort to shift votes.
This included direct lobbying of Latin American and European governments, hosting events at the UN that Cuban officials called a "sham" and public appeals by U.S. officials urging countries to oppose the resolution.
This pressure contributed to several countries abstaining or voting “no” for the first time in decades, including Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, and the UAE. However, it is overall a profound defeat and embarrassment for the US and shows that Cuba continues to enjoy overwhelming global solidarity.
The vote followed heated exchanges between U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, including a shouting match on the General Assembly floor
With the cruel escalation of the genocidal blockade by Trump and Rubio Cuba is experiencing a deepening financial and energy crisis, power outages affecting essential services such as healthcare and water supply and significant economic losses due to U.S. sanctions, including billions in damages reported by Cuba.
