Leftist Iván Cepeda, a senator and ally of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, has advanced to the second, run-off round in Colombia's presidential election although he did so unexpectedly trailing far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella.

In the first round of the 2026 presidential election on Sunday, Cepeda received approximately 40.9% of the vote, finishing just behind de la Espriella, who garnered around 43.7%. Because no candidate surpassed the 50% threshold, a runoff election is scheduled for June 21, 2026.

Cepeda's candidacy is seen as a continuation of the progressive policies initiated during Petro’s administration, focusing on social programs, human rights, and the peace process in Colombia. His campaign has sought to appeal to voters seeking advances in areas such as fighting inequality, environmental policy, and indigenous and Afro-Colombian rights.

In the weeks leading up to the election, Cepeda consistently led in public opinion polls. A poll conducted by the National Consulting Centre (CNC) on May 24 indicated that he had over 33 percent support, surpassing de la Espriella's 30.9 percent. Given that de la Espriella placed ahead of Cepeda and that the right is expected to rally around him now, Cepeda faces an uphill battle to win.

The upcoming runoff is expected to be highly competitive and closely watched nationally and internationally. The outcome could significantly shape Colombia's political direction for many years and the future of Petro's progressive project.
