On the 73rd Anniversary of Moncada

Statement of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) on the 73rd Anniversary of July 26

On July 26, 1953, the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks ushered in a new era in Cuba’s history. That revolutionary action, led by Fidel Castro, marked the beginning of a process that would lead to the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959 and which, shortly after that, would move decisively along the path of socialism.

Seventy-three years later, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain salutes the Cuban people and the Communist Party of Cuba, which continue to defend the achievements of the Revolution.

The Cuban experience demonstrates that a people’s independence cannot be reduced to the formal attainment of political sovereignty. As long as resources, the economy, and the main levers of power remain in the hands of capital, independence will always be threatened by the economic and political domination of the great powers and monopolies.

The Cuban Revolution was able to move beyond that formal independence. The transformation of property relations, the planning of the economy, and the construction of a government rooted in the revolutionary people made it possible to guarantee social rights and achievements that for decades have served as a model for millions of workers around the world.

This is precisely the reason why Cuba has suffered constant aggression from U.S. imperialism. The economic blockade, sanctions, destabilization operations, and support for the counter-revolution pursue a goal that has never changed: to destroy the revolutionary achievements and restore capital’s dominance over the Cuban economy and society. This criminal blockade deliberately seeks to strangle the country’s economy, cause shortages, and worsen the living conditions of the Cuban people in order to overthrow the revolutionary process.

This is why the PCTE once again demands the immediate and unconditional lifting of the blockade, the removal of Cuba from the infamous list of state sponsors of terrorism, and rejects any form of interference against the sovereignty of the Cuban people, as well as the constant media disinformation campaigns that seek to stigmatize Cuba and justify imperialist aggression.

In an increasingly complex international landscape, marked by the intensification of contradictions among capitalist powers and by growing economic and military competition, Cuba’s historical experience remains as relevant as ever. The emancipation of peoples cannot rest on the balance of power between one power or another, but rather on their ability to forge an independent path in the face of capital.

That is why defending the Cuban Revolution also means defending the relevance of socialism, affirming the importance of social ownership of concentrated means of production, of economic planning, and of the political leadership of the working class. It means defending an economy geared toward meeting social needs rather than ensuring private profit.

July 26 reminds us that every revolutionary transformation is the result of the organization, consciousness, and fighting spirit of those who put forward the end of exploitation and building of a new society.

On this anniversary, the PCTE reaffirms its internationalist solidarity with the Cuban people and its commitment to defending the Revolution and its socialist achievements — a commitment we carry forward into the daily struggle in our country, combating anti-Cuban propaganda and promoting the working class’s active solidarity with socialist Cuba.
