On the Occasion of the Glorious December Revolution Anniversary: Sudanese CP

The Sudanese December Revolution that eventually led to the downfall of President Omar al-Bashir on April 11, 2019 after thirty years in power began with street protests on December 19, 2018. Mass protests continued after that against the Transitional Military Council (TMC) that replaced him until an agreement was signed in August 2019 promising a transition to civilian and democratic rule. Tragically, Sudan has been gripped by a brutal civil war since April 2023. The Sudanese Communist Party issued a statement earlier this month in honour of the anniversary of the revolution and calling for a grassroots popular front to stop the ongoing civil war and reclaim the revolution.

The Political Bureau of the Sudanese Communist Party: Public Communiqué on the Occasion of the Glorious December Revolution Anniversary

Let us struggle together for:

  • Opening roads to deliver food and medicine to millions of hungry and sick people.

  • Building a broad grassroots popular front to stop the war and reclaim the revolution.

To our steadfast and proud people, in various places of displacement inside and outside the country, and to those who have remained in their homes suffering greatly:

These days mark the sixth anniversary of the glorious December Revolution, and our country has been suffering for twenty months from the scourge of a fierce war, which continues to rage and destroy everything in its path.

While the two warring sides differ over power and wealth, they have united in their strategic goals against this revolution, working to dismantle and disperse its forces.

The main and greatest burden has fallen on unarmed civilians, particularly the revolutionary forces among them. The warring parties have spread terror and intimidation to break the will of the revolutionary forces by forcing tens of millions into displacement and killing tens of thousands. Daily deaths due to hunger and lack of medicine have also occurred.

Both sides have deliberately hindered the delivery of humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to those in need. Furthermore, there have been acts of rape, violations of citizens’ dignity, and looting of their properties. As a result, this war has led to an unprecedented catastrophic situation in our country.

We call upon our resilient people inside and outside the country: rise above our wounds and emerge from this rubble to celebrate the anniversary of the glorious December Revolution this year. Let each celebrate in their own way according to their circumstances and capabilities.

Let us celebrate together, inside and outside, raising our voices high to let the whole world hear us and show solidarity with our people. Support their struggle to achieve their urgent and just humanitarian demands: stop the war, open roads and passages to deliver food and medicine to tens of millions of our hungry and sick people, and provide them with the necessary protection from the oppression and violence of the warring parties. Let’s ensure their freedom of movement.

Let us make our celebration of the December Revolution this year a platform for the unity of its forces in all its components: political forces, resistance committees, trade union fronts, civil society organizations, and more.

Let us unite in a broad grassroots popular front to stop the war, reclaim the revolution’s path, and achieve its slogans.

Glory and eternity to the martyrs of the glorious December Revolution.

The Political Bureau of the Sudanese Communist Party
