The Puerto Rico Committee of Solidarity with Cuba (CSC) has called for a total national and international rejection of organizations and governments supporting Donald Trump’s new order against Cuba.
Milagros Rivera, president of the CSC, called out the audacity of the U.S. president for threatening dangerous military aggression against Cuba on May 1st, the very day millions of Cubans filled streets and squares to celebrate International Workers' Day.
On that day, the people of Cuba handed in over six million signatures for peace and in defense of the Revolution, gathered in just 12 days—from April 19 to 30—despite a fuel shortage caused by the oil blockade imposed by the White House.
"The Cuban people stand strong and ready to defend their political and social ideals, along with their sovereignty and dignity; it’s up to other governments to show the same self-respect.," the Puerto Rican leader stated.
Rivera emphasized that the U.S. government aims to defeat Cuba and, in doing so, criminalizes acts of solidarity.
"It’s upset that since January 29, when the oil blockade was put in place, Cuba has been pushing for changes to its electric power system. It frustrates them that the world backs Cuba not just with words but with real economic and material aid, and that people still travel there in solidarity despite the threats.," the CSC president stressed.
He mentioned that a solidarity event wrapped up on May 2, bringing together 766 delegates from 36 countries representing 152 social, political, trade union, peace, pro-Cuba, and other movements.
"They approved a forceful Declaration in favor of Cuba, solidarity and peace. They repudiated the criminal policies of the empire and pledged to fight it in every corner of the planet," he said.
Rivera emphasized that Cuba has stood with dignity for over 65 years against aggression and a criminal blockade, which was intensified this year with harsh measures like the oil blockade. He noted that, although they know Cuba poses no threat to the empire, it represents hope for the people, and that is what troubles the imperialists.
"That is why, if they touch Cuba, they touch us all," he said, encouraging movements, organizations, and governments with integrity to unite in a common front to defend Cuba.
He also said that the Latin American and Caribbean diaspora, along with immigrants from other continents who have suffered under racist policies in the United States, need to come together in that country and declare that enough is enough.
The American people must rein in their rulers, he concluded.
