Lula's victory in the presidential elections against Flávio Bolsonaro represented a hard blow against the Brazilian far right and the pretensions of US imperialism to expand its dominion over Latin America. However, the political scenario remains quite adverse for the Brazilian working class. The composition of the National Congress, with a conservative majority committed to the neoliberal agenda and to sectors linked to the neofascist project, demonstrates that the battle against the far right will still be long and will require permanent mobilization and unity of action to defend the rights already won and to advance in the conquest of new demands.
This conjuncture becomes even more serious in the face of Flávio Bolsonaro's flight to the United States and the possible consequences of this episode for Brazil, even taking into account his pathetic letter, in which he calls himself president-elect of Brazil. The flight of the defeated candidate constitutes an event of enormous political gravity, whose significance goes beyond Brazilian borders. His search for protection on US territory, in the face of the investigations and accusations involving his crimes, cannot be interpreted as an isolated episode, but must be understood in the context of the historical relations between imperialism and the reactionary Latin American oligarchies.
Over the course of decades, the United States has harbored and protected authoritarian politicians, coup conspirators and representatives of the dominant classes committed to its strategic interests. US imperialism, which seeks to present itself as a defender of democracy and freedom, does not hesitate to harbor and protect the most reactionary elements in Latin America when its economic and geopolitical interests are at stake.
The protection given by Donald Trump's government to Flávio Bolsonaro represents yet another manifestation of this policy of interference in the internal affairs of Latin American countries. It would not be surprising if Washington sought to turn the situation of the defeated candidate into an instrument of pressure against Brazil, using accusations of political persecution to attack the Supreme Federal Court, question the legitimacy of the electoral result and fuel new campaigns to destabilize the Brazilian government. The use of representatives of the Latin American far right as instruments of US foreign policy constitutes a historically known practice, especially when these sectors demonstrate a willingness to subordinate the sovereignty of their countries to the interests of imperialism.
Flávio Bolsonaro's flight could be used by the US government as a pretext to accuse Brazilian institutions of persecution and authoritarianism, intensifying Donald Trump's pressures against national sovereignty and encouraging attacks on democratic institutions and the federal government. In this sense, the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) reaffirms the need for a rigorous investigation of the accusations against the Bolsonaro clan, its allies, financiers and possible accomplices, with the due accountability of those whose crimes are proven.
There can be no impunity for coup articulations nor tolerance for initiatives aimed at subverting the popular will expressed at the ballot box. The defense of democratic freedoms also requires confronting the economic and political forces that finance, sustain and seek to legitimize the far right in Brazil.
The participation or facilitation of Javier Milei's government in Flávio Bolsonaro's movement through Argentine territory adds another worrying element to this scenario. The articulation between far-right governments, neofascist political forces and sectors of US imperialism constitutes a concrete threat to the sovereignty and democratic achievements of the Latin American peoples.
This convergence is not limited to solidarity among reactionary leaders, but expresses an identity of economic and social projects: submission to international financial capital, privatization of national wealth, destruction of labor rights, repression of popular movements and deepening of economic dependence. It is a continental alliance of the dominant classes against the workers and peoples of the region, in which neofascism appears as a political instrument for preserving the privileges of big capital.
The PCB warns that US imperialism will not remain passive in the face of the political defeats of its allies in Latin America. The crisis of US international hegemony, far from making its foreign policy less aggressive, tends to stimulate new forms of intervention, economic blackmail and political destabilization.
In this scenario, the defense of national and popular sovereignty is indissolubly linked to internationalist solidarity with the peoples who resist imperialist domination, especially Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine and the other countries subjected to threats, blockades and aggressions. It is necessary to strengthen the sovereign integration of the Latin American peoples, combat the foreign military presence in the region and reject any attempt to turn our continent into a territory subordinate to Washington's interests.
Faced with this conjuncture, the Brazilian Communist Party calls on the working class, the youth, the popular movements and all democratic and anti-imperialist forces to maintain permanent mobilization against fascism, neoliberalism and foreign interference. The electoral defeat of Bolsonarism represented an important democratic conquest, but the political and social battle is far from over.
We cannot allow imperialist interests to condition the future of Brazil or allow the popular victory to be emptied by the continuity of economic policies favorable to big capital. The struggle against neofascism also requires confronting neoliberalism, the concentration of wealth and the policy of class conciliation, which preserves the economic and political power of the dominant sectors responsible for sustaining the reaction.
It is necessary to transform resistance against the maneuvers of imperialism into a powerful political and social offensive of the workers, strengthening their class organizations, preserving their political independence and expanding their capacity for mobilization and struggle. The defense of the legitimacy of the electoral result and of democratic freedoms must be articulated with the conquest of new rights, the revocation of neoliberal counter-reforms and the construction of a political alternative committed to the historical interests of the working class.
Only the independent organization of the workers, popular mobilization and the struggle for people's power will be able to confront the economic and social roots of fascism, break with imperialist domination and open the way for the construction of a sovereign, democratic and socialist Brazil.
