Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos addressed the plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels on the grave humanitarian situation in Cuba, condemning the United States’ economic strangulation of the island. In his speech, he stated:
“We condemn the United States’ economic strangulation of Cuba, which has amounted to a veritable genocide against its people. The 67-year economic, commercial, and financial blockade has cost more than $2 trillion at current prices. It deprives the people of essential goods, medicines, and services.
The blockade on imports of oil and fuel creates severe difficulties in the provision of electricity. It poses a life-threatening risk to tens of thousands of people with chronic conditions, including diabetics, cancer patients, those with heart disease, and pregnant women. The EU supports this strategy by endorsing US interventions in Venezuela and Iran, while the European Parliament, through resolutions calling for sanctions against the Cuban people, provides a platform for all manner of coup-mongering mechanisms.
The people of Greece stand with Cuba. Through mass demonstrations and other initiatives of solidarity, they demand the immediate lifting of the blockade and all sanctions, as well as the removal of Cuba from the shameful list of ‘state sponsors of terrorism’.
For seven decades, the Cuban people have thwarted the plans of North American imperialism to overthrow their Revolution. Building on this heroic struggle, and with the solidarity of all the peoples across the world towards the Communist Party and the Cuban people, they will succeed!
Hands off Cuba! Cuba is not, and never has been, alone!”
