Tô Lâm meets with Xi Jinping during official visit to China

Vietnamese General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm is in the People's Republic of China on an official visit from April 14 to 17, 2026, engaging in state-level meetings and a forum on higher education, science, and innovation at Tsinghua University.


During this state visit, Tô Lâm is aiming to strengthen bilateral ties between Vietnam and China, with a strong focus on education, technology, and scientific cooperation. The visit reflects Vietnam’s priorities in fostering international partnerships in higher education and innovation.


A key part of the visit so far included a forum at Tsinghua University, where Tô Lâm delivered a policy speech highlighting Vietnam–China collaboration in higher education and research. Topics addressed included academic cooperation, scientific innovation, and technology exchange, emphasizing the role of higher education in driving bilateral development.


On April 15 Tô Lâm met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing which included a formal cooperation document signing ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. The documents signed covered areas including inter-party exchanges, public security, justice, economy, industrial and supply chain cooperation, customs cooperation, science and technology, people's livelihoods, human resources development, media, and sub-national cooperation.


At the meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed closer ties with Vietnam over the two countries’ shared political system. “Safeguarding the socialist system and the ruling status of the Communist Party constitutes the largest shared strategic interest of the two parties of China and Vietnam,” Xi said according to a CCTV readout.


Tô Lâm also met with Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),


The delegation accompanying Tô Lâm includes high-ranking officials and his spouse, reflecting the official and ceremonial significance of the visit.
