On Saturday, Vietnam reiterated its strong support for Cuba amid the challenges the island is facing and stated that it has provided tangible assistance in areas like agriculture and energy to help ease the hardships of the Cuban people.

At the regular meeting of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) ambassadors at the UN headquarters in New York, Do Hung Viet, head of the Vietnamese mission, called on member states to uphold the movement’s spirit of solidarity and maintain their support for the Caribbean nation.

The diplomat urged the rejection of embargoes and unilateral sanctions, advocating instead for dialogue between Cuba and the United States grounded in mutual respect, peace, stability, and the shared interests of their peoples.

In honor of the 51st anniversary of Vietnam's reunification, celebrated on April 30, the ambassador conveyed his gratitude for the assistance given by the movement during his country's fight against colonialism and imperialism, as well as in its post-war rebuilding and development.

In this context, he emphasized Cuba's strong support, as expressed in President Fidel Castro's historic statement: "For Vietnam we are willing to give even our own blood."

As president-designate of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Do Hung Viet updated NAM members on the conference’s progress, highlighting the complicated global situation and the difficulties in achieving consensus.

He also urged member states to stay actively involved, encourage open and constructive dialogue, and work together to reach a fair and meaningful outcome that boosts trust in the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

At the same meeting, Cuba’s permanent representative to the UN, Ernesto Soberón, criticized the United States for continuing to tighten sanctions, especially in sectors like energy, trade, and tourism. He noted that these measures have a serious impact on the island’s economy, society, and overall standard of living, particularly affecting access to food and medical care.
