Brussels, 17 April 2026 - A delegation from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, led by Emilio Lozada García, head of the Department of International Relations, and joined by Elier Ramírez Cañedo, deputy head of the Ideological Department, is attending the 8th Congress of the Party of the European Left (PEL). The event was held in Brussels on April 17 and 18 under the slogan: "Win the Future. Fight Austerity. Stop Militarisation".
In his speech during the international section of the Congress, Lozada García shared an update on the difficult situation the Cuban people are experiencing as a result of the unprecedented tightening of the economic blockade. After January 29, the U.S. government's economic and financial measures targeting Cuba expanded to include the fuel sector. This followed an Executive Order declaring Cuba an “unusual and extraordinary” threat to the nation’s security. In his remarks, he also thanked the PEL for its ongoing solidarity with Cuba in the fight against this genocidal and unilateral policy that hinders Cuba's legitimate right to development and the building of socialism, emphasizing the urgent need for unity and coordination. A coalition of leftist and progressive forces united to challenge the global resurgence of fascism and oppose the neocolonial ambitions of American imperialism.
During the Congress, a special solidarity event with Cuba was held, emphasizing the steadfast resistance of the Cuban people against the blockade. A portion of the event was dedicated to honoring the centenary of the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz. In his speech, Elier Ramírez underscored the relevance of the historical leader's legacy in addressing the current challenges facing humanity and stressed the importance of studying his ideas for future generations.
The Central Committee delegation invited to this European party meeting will also have bilateral talks with various international delegations, including the Communist Party of China, the Labor Party of China (Taiwan), the Workers' Party of Brazil (PT), Sortu, Syriza, and others, as well as with the PEL president, Walter Baier.
