The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) reports that the strength of the Greek organized labour movement was on full display at the strike rally held outside the Greek Ministry of Labour on June 24.

Striking workers from the construction, hospitality and tourism sectors, as well as from the food and beverage industries, gathered to demonstrate.

Workers from three of the largest sectors of the Greek economy took strike action, uniting their voices and their struggle in support of the following demands:

  • Substantive health and safety measures;

  • A 7-hour working day, a 5-day working week, and a total working week of 35 hours;

  • A reduction in the retirement age;

  • Wage increases and collective labour agreements.

Construction workers, in particular, demanded an end to the theft of their social security contributions by employers and called for the sector’s collective labour agreement to be made binding on all employers.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumbas, attended the Ministry of Labour, where workers from the three sectors were holding their strike rallies. Addressing the assembled strikers, he stated:

“On behalf of the Central Committee of the KKE, we extend a warm, militant, and comradely greeting to your great strike struggle. Today’s strike action by workers in construction, tourism, hotels, food and beverage, and Regional Units constitute a first major and dynamic response to the government’s policies.

Through their great struggle today, workers are demonstrating that they reject the government’s policies or the social pact between the government, the compromised GSEE and the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV).

Victory belongs to you; we stand alongside you. We wish you strength in your struggles, good health and every success. We move forward”.
